Understanding Animal Cruelty

Animal cruelty can take many forms. It may be deliberate harm, but it can also be neglect: leaving an animal without food, water, shelter or medical attention.

What cruelty can look like

  • Physical harm or abuse towards an animal.
  • Neglect, such as lack of food, water, shelter or care.
  • Abandonment of animals that depend on people.
  • Untreated injuries or illness.
  • Unsafe or unsanitary living conditions.

Why speaking up matters

Animals cannot speak for themselves. When people notice a problem and share it responsibly, it can bring attention to an animal in need and help the right people consider appropriate action.

What you can do

If you witness suspected cruelty, keep yourself safe, document the situation if it is safe to do so, and report it with the location and details. If there is immediate danger, contact the appropriate emergency authorities or a veterinary service.
